"Canada outlawed Aboriginal spiritual practices, jailed Aboriginal spiritual leaders and confiscated sacred objects. Canada separated children from their parents, sending them to residential schools. This was done not to educate them, but primarily to break their link to their culture and identity."
- Commission on Truth and Reconciliation Report, 2014.
This Applied Theatre 'Canadian Truth and Reconciliation' project began in 2013 and addresses the complex history of residential schools and their catastrophic effects on indigenous communities, families and individuals.
The article on the project can be found in our resources and offers valuable reflection and consideration on the dynamics and tensions involved in ASC work with insights from Dr. Warwick Dobson, Phil Duchene, Lauren Jerke, and Fiona Donnelly-Rheaume.
Lauren Jerke was also part of the ASC! Research Project. You can find more resources co-authored by Jerke, along with Dobson and Monica Prendergast, here.
