ICASC is pleased to announce its first Fall Institute, Exploring Arts for Social Change. This is the first university-based course of its kind to be offered in Canada.
We encourage the participation of students, artists and anyone interested in exploring community-engaged arts as potent elements in diverse agendas such as:
• health promotion and training
• work with youth and elders, with new Canadians and with marginalized populations
• social justice, human rights and environmental work
• inter-generational and inter-cultural work
• conflict resolution
• urban planning policies and practices
• creative business practices
• leadership and social innovation agendas
Here are some Institute details:
•Three-hour evening sessions, once weekly, for 12 weeks
•Classes held in downtown Vancouver locations
•Teaching based in dialogue and experiential learning, including hands-on projects
•Senior guest artist/facilitators
•Offered through SFU Continuing Studies, the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Communication, Arts and Technology (FCAT)
•Available for both non-credit learners and for-credit students.
The Institute will explore:
•Historical and contemporary overviews of arts for social change
•Current local and global forms of work in the field: disciplines, forms, purposes, contexts, consequences, partnerships and ethics, including case studies
•Dialogue through the arts; an introduction to dialogue practices including facilitation techniques
•Working with diverse communities: building and sustaining community-arts partnerships: cross-sector, cross-discipline and institutional partnerships (e.g. outreach strategies, setting goals, clarifying process, public access issues, cultural translation, etc.)
•Workshops with visiting community-based artists, who are working in the field
•Creation of a small-scale, collaborative arts project, taking students through an experiential arts process based in issues in their own neighbourhoods
Details about credit, tuition, registration and faculty will be posted as they become available. ICASC is currently raising funds for students who need financial assistance for non-credit tuition. info@icasc.ca.
