EARTH=home is an inter-disciplinary, large-scale show that incorporates music, theatre, dance and multi-media technology. Based on three years of arts workshops with young people from diverse communities, EARTH=home showcases their thoughts and feelings about the state of our planet and where we are taking it.
Using a variety of arts-based practices and incorporating the central issues that resulted from the EARTH Project, these workshops produced bold stories, personal observations and deep emotions, the “raw material” for the creation, by our core artistic team of eleven performers, of the script for EARTH=home.
ENTERTAINING
EARTH=home is entertaining, fast-paced and accessible, with a very rhythmic score, a wide range of dance styles, and video projections, photographs and text in the form of an email conversation between two teenagers. Using the JMP trademark combination of humor, drama, great performances and cutting-edge technology, EARTH=home energizes audiences of all ages, while giving voice to the perceptions and dreams of young people.
IMPACTFUL
EARTH=home is about making connections between the “developed” world and the majority, between young and old, between rich and poor. It recognizes that what are often perceived as global issues – as something taking place “over there” – are also local issues that take place here, at home, in Canada.
Designed to initiate further thought, discussion and community involvement, while also provocative and fun, EARTH=home engages the head and the heart.
BROAD REACHING
EARTH=home is more than a stage production. Working with schools, environmental/social justice NGOs and other community stakeholders, EARTH=home engages the broader community through post-show talk-backs, presentations, workshops, community events, web-based resources, and media activities, providing extensive exposure for all of our partners.
THE PRODUCTION
The EARTH Project explored issues of global sustainability and social justice and was a international initiative that involved EARTH Partners in Canada and 25 other countries. By connecting local youth with the sometimes startlingly different lives of other young people, the EARTH Project nurtured the creation of global citizens while educating and inspiring them to take action in their own communities.
Onscreen email dialogue and "factoid" text from EARTH=home 2009 production. The email conversation is based on excerpts from emails from workshop participants during the three year creation process. EARTH=home "factoids" are displayed onscreen at intervals throughout the show to support the on-stage action.
